This section will cover the use of restraint on children in custody and care of the state. It will look at issues raised by the inquest into the death of Gareth Myatt, a 15 year old boy who died in Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre while being restrained by three officers. The move that they use - the double seated embrace - has now been banned and the inquest, which is ongoing, is hearing evidence about it was approved in the first place.
It raises important wider questions on how staff should control disruptive children. I will place postings with news from the inquest and will consider what the government is doing at the moment to ensure that the restraint methods still used on the 3,000 children in custody and the 11,000 children looked after by councils are safe.
Are you a worker and have encountered problems with using restraints? Or have you been in custody or care and been restrained yourself? If you have anything to say about your experiences and what you think shouldl be done to improve the experiences of others in the future, please write your comments here.
